What makes different to other building techniques the Ecosism system, used

in Origamiproject?

Foremost, the Ecosism technology has always been developed and updated, using resources for research and tests. Ecosism  realise bearing-load aseismic concrete structures. Each module (be it a wall or ceiling) is light (about 6kg/mq) and easy to move and install before concrete cast. The whole building can be erect using this technology, from the foundations to the roof. Furthermore, the Ecosism modules have high thermal and acoustic performances and many different insulating and finishing materials can be selected amongst a great option variety. The modules for an Origamiproject house are manufactured and delivered with all the doors and windows openings in the right position, making the building process faster and cheaper.

What are the energy consumption and insulation features of the Ecosism system, used in the Origamiproject houses?

Today everyone’s talking about green zero impact buildings. To realize low consumption buildings is by now the primary task of every contractor and real-estate company. A technologically updated house is the first option of choice for every new customer. A low energy consumption building (low thermal emission) is not only an environment protection purpose, but is also the house standard feature for every new owner. As is common knowledge, if the house doesn’t waste energy (heat) a correct built-in air circulation and renewal system is necessary, by using the automatic control of ventilation. This system will grant a correct air volume replacement and will keep stable the desired internal temperature, both in hot and cold seasons.The building technique use different kind of insulation materials, but the most common is the expanded polystyrene, or EPS. This innovative material has an optimal cost benefit ratio and it has been tested for more than 30 years. It’s very easy to find and it’s also used for food purposes.

Origamiproject’s houses uses a wall coded NES 22+15+5, with an external EPS insulation panel 22 cm thick, armed concrete layer 15 cm thick and the internal EPS insulation panel 5 cm thick. This wall is not only anti-seismic, but also completely proofed, without any presence of thermal bridges. The internal insulation is treated with a specific care. This insulation layer protect the solid wall from the cold air in the winter and from the hot air during the summer. As well as be the formwork for the cast, it makes possible to warm up or cool down only the internal air volume, reducing the power needed for the central heating plant or any other kind of heating system. It will be always possible to choose another kind of insulation material, as fiberglass or rockwool, as requested by the customer.

What is the fire resistance of the Ecosism building technique, used in the Origamiproject houses?

The technology used by Ecosism creates a monolythic concrete building. The fire spread through the system depends on certain features as by the concrete thickness, by the kind of insulation materials used and by the bar covers set on the modules. Even if the fire proof time may vary, the minmum time granted is 120 minutes (REI 120). Even though there are some materials, like fiberglass and rockwool, that grants a better fireproof feature, the EPS has been tested for more than 30 years and so it’s considered a safe material in case of fire.

How does the ECOSISM technology reacts in case of earthquake?

All the trials has been done by the University of Padua. The continuous monolithic armed structure, hold by the wire mesh module, gives a great advantage. The armed concrete continuous cast creates a closed box without weak points.

In case of earthquake, the structure reacts as a whole body, without the weakness points that we can find on a typical old concrete – bricks mixed structure, in which the brick walls are not connected to the framework.

Is the expanded polystyrene toxic?

The polystyrene manufactured today doesn’t emit any kind of toxic soot. The materials must always be tested and they always need a fireproof certificate.(RF 1)

How can be inserted a window on the Ecosism modules, used in the Origamiproject houses?

Windows and door windows must be directly connected to the concrete layer. The waterproof sealing is manufactured by filling the empty space between the window frame and  the modules with the expanding foam and following the esternal plaster instructions.

The best procedure to install the windows is analyzed during the design process, depending on the type of windows (balcony shutters, built-in awning, …) and the position relative to the wall (windows aligned with the internal surfaces, the external, or in the center of walls).

The knowledge of the windows features before modules manufacturing is recommended. Once a window model is selected, it will be very easy, fast and economic to install the window’s frame inside the armed concrete layer, and the thermal bridges will be eliminated using the insulation materials.
